Cerro Gordo Community Unit School District 100

MISSION STATEMENT

"Partnering with the community to provide a high quality education in a nurturing, yet challenging environment that will empower all students to become competent and responsible citizens."

To the Citizens of the Cerro Gordo and Bement School Districts,

It has come to our attention that many of the residents of the Bement and Cerro Gordo School Districts have heard talk recently, linking the two.  To set the record straight, we would like to separate fact from unfounded rumors.

The Bement and Cerro Gordo superintendents, as well as the high school principals, have recently opened a dialogue with each other to discuss the potential of partnering together in ways that could be mutually beneficial to the students in both high schools.  The administrators have communicated with each of their respective school boards about the discussions.  Details will be discussed at each of the school districts’ regular February school board meetings.  If both school boards find merit in what is presented to them in February, community meetings could be held between the February and March board meetings to allow for input from parents and community members.

Bement and Cerro Gordo Schools have begun these talks in light of the recent decision by the Atwood-Hammond School District to pursue merger options with the Arthur School District.  Bement High School has been co-oping extracurricular activities with Atwood-Hammond High School since the mid-1990’s and currently co-op the following high school sports together:  football, baseball and track & field for boys, and basketball, softball and track & field for girls.  Based on the plans announced by Atwood-Hammond, the Bement School District determined they should explore all possible options available to them.

Along with looking at co-oping some of the above extra-curricular activities, the administrators are also reviewing the potential benefit of sharing other resources.  There exists a potential for expanding course offerings to students in each high school.  For example, Bement has an industrial technology teacher, but no agriculture program; Cerro Gordo has an agriculture teacher, but no industrial technology program.  Cerro Gordo offers French and Spanish; Bement offers Spanish but not French.  The feasibility of extending some of the offerings in each school to the other and the logistics of doing so are being discussed.

Bement School District and Cerro Gordo School District have not discussed, nor are they presently pursuing, any form of consolidation.  A consolidation of two or more school districts occurs only when a referendum to consolidate is placed on a ballot and the registered voters vote in favor of it in all communities involved.   Neither administrators, nor school boards, can decide to consolidate two districts together; only a majority of the registered voters in each community can.

To re-emphasize, the dialogue has just begun, so there are really no “hard and fast” details to share at this point in time.  The administrators are simply looking for ways to partner together for the benefit of Bement and Cerro Gordo students.   As more information becomes available, we will keep the communities informed.
